KC Improv Company Workshop Series
The KC Improv Company provides a series of workshops throughout the year taught by improvisors and artists and designed to help advanced improvisors hone their skills and develop their talents. Participants in these workshops are expected to have a basic working knowledge of improvisational terms and techniques.
The Voice of Reason: Mastering Straight Characters
This workshop is designed to help you recognize and participate effectively in scenes as a straight character. The voice of reason or straight character is the one who calls out the unusual behavior of a scene. They represent a voice for the audience and are often the ones who keep the scene grounded in reality. The voice of reason allows for an unusual thing to be explored and heightened by getting to the justification of why the unusual behavior is happening.
Week 1 – Playing the Voice of Reason
Week one will focus on exercises on what it means to play straight characters and characters grounded in reality.
Week 2 – Being the Voice of Reason in a Scene
Week two will focus on how to be the voice of reason in sustained scenes in order to find the game and heighten.
Jessica has been doing Improv in Kansas city for a little over 2 years. She has performed with indie teams, ‘The Colin Collective’ and ‘Mortal Wombat’ over the past year. Her main goal in life is to finally be accepted for who she is.. by her cat, Marley. Jessica has a passion for digging up the past which, means she no longer gets invited to family holidays.
When: 2 Saturdays – February 18th and February 25th, 2017. From 3:00pm – 5:00pm
Where: Kick Comedy Theater at 4010 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City MO. Located in between the Green Room Burgers and Beer and the Westport Coffehouse.
Who: This workshop is for intermediate and advanced improvisors. Attendees must have completed through Level 301 at the KCIC Training Center or have equivalent improv experience. For questions if this workshop is right for you, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.

This KC Improv Company workshop is for individuals ages 17+. For younger improvisors, please ask about our teen opportunities.
