KC Improv Company Workshop Series
The KC Improv Company provides a series of workshops throughout the year taught by improvisers and artists and designed to help advanced improvisers hone their skills and develop their talents. Participants in these workshops are expected to have a basic working knowledge of improvisational terms and techniques.
Format: Improvised Musical
Come join the KCIC Training Center’s Musical Workshop Series! In this 3-week intensive, you’ll learn the basics of structuring a song from nothing, the types of songs and tropes in musicals, and finally how to throw it all together in a full length (*ahem*20 minute*ahem*) musical! Nervous to sing? Then there’s no better place to do it than in the company of other supportive improvisers ready to back you up with harmony and dance moves! And you will sing a lot! This Genre-based workshop is being taught by Colin Sandall, co-director and music director for KCIC’s award-winning format, Presto! The Improvised Musical. Come sing! Come dance! Come create a show with us!

Just sing! Get those butterflies out and make up some songs using structured games and exercises. Then, we’ll talk about some common song types and work on how to weave them into a brand new piece based on a suggestion.

Using tools from week 1, we’ll begin to go over the structure of a musical itself. We’ll point out tropes and ideas, as well as specific song styles including the “Want song” and “11 o’clock number.” After this week, you’ll be a pro at the art of song-spotting!

In our final week, we’ll throw everything into a set and see what happens! We’ll talk about everyone’s important roles within the set and how to best support the story-at-large. We’ll run a few sets and go over some notes to help fine-tune the format. Let’s sing and play!

As a graduate of the KCIC Training center, Colin has been improvising with the company since 2014. In that time, he’s taught a bit, directed a bit, and played piano a lot. He has performed with TypeCast, a KCIC House Team and routinely performs with Johnny and the Douchebags. Most other show nights, you’ll see him finger-slapping the ol’ piano-box during Presto! The Improvised Musical, a format he co-directs. By day, Colin can be found tricking middle school students into thinking he knows anything about choir. His approach to teaching middle school is much like his approach to working with KCIC: “Welp! They haven’t fired me yet!”
